NDA Eligibility for Arts and Commerce Students 2026: Can You Apply?

Many students think the NDA exam is only for science students. This is the biggest myth about NDA. The truth is simple: yes, arts and commerce students can apply for NDA, but only for the Army wing. In this guide, we explain everything in very simple terms, so even a class 8 or 9 student can fully understand it.

Quick answer in one line

If you are from the arts or commerce, you can join the Army wing of NDA. If you want the Air Force or Navy wing, you must have Physics and Maths in class 12.

What is a "wing" in NDA?

NDA selects students for three forces: the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. Each force is called a "wing." The exam is the same for everyone, but the subjects you need in class 12 are different for each wing.

Wing

Stream allowed

Subjects needed in class 12

Army

Any stream (Arts, Commerce, Science)

Just pass class 12

Air Force

Science only

Physics + Maths

Navy

Science only

Physics + Maths

So, an arts or commerce student is 100% eligible for the Army wing. You only miss the Air Force and Navy because those need Physics and Maths.

Can a commerce student apply for NDA?

Yes. A commerce student can apply for the Army wing. You do not need Maths or Science for the Army wing — passing class 12 in any subjects is enough. If a commerce student has also studied Maths, they still cannot pick Air Force or Navy unless they also had Physics.

Can an arts student apply for NDA?

Yes. An arts student (with subjects like History, Political Science, etc.) can apply for the Army wing in the same way. Stream does not stop you. Many officers in the Indian Army started as arts students.

Is there any minimum percentage?

No. There is no minimum percentage to apply for NDA. You only need to pass class 12 from a recognised board. Students who are still in class 12 (appearing) can also apply.

Other basic rules (same for all streams)

These rules are the same for arts, commerce, and science students:

  • Age: You must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years. For NDA 2 2026, you should be born between 2 January 2008 and 1 January 2011 (always check the official notice for exact dates).

  • Marital status: You must be unmarried.

  • Gender: Both boys and girls can apply. Girls are allowed in all wings.

  • Nationality: You should be an Indian citizen (some Nepal, Bhutan and special cases are also allowed).

What if you want the Air Force or Navy, but you are in arts/commerce?

You have two simple choices:

  1. Aim for the Army wing through NDA it is open to you right now.

  2. If you are still in class 9 or 10, you can choose the Science stream with Physics and Maths in class 11, so that all three wings open up for you later.

This is why students who dream of NDA should plan their stream early. If you are unsure, talk to a teacher or a good NDA coaching mentor before choosing your stream.

A simple example

Riya is a Class 12 commerce student in Punjab. She wants to join the Indian Army as an officer. She is 17 years old and unmarried. Riya is fully eligible to apply for the NDA Army wing. She does not need Maths or Physics for this.

Aman is an arts student. He wants the Air Force. Sadly, the Air Force wing needs Physics and Maths, which Aman did not take. So Aman can still apply for the Army wing, but not the Air Force.

How to start preparing (arts/commerce students)

The NDA written exam has two papers: Maths (300 marks) and General Ability Test or GAT (600 marks). Even arts and commerce students must prepare the Maths paper, because it is part of the exam for every wing.

Easy first steps:

  • Build your Class 10-level Maths well (most NDA maths starts from there).

  • Read newspapers daily to improve English and General Knowledge for the GAT paper.

  • Practice previous year question papers.

  • Stay physically fit for the SSB interview and medical test that come after the written exam.

If you want expert help, Veron Institute runs structured NDA batches that guide arts and commerce students from day one. You can see our NDA coaching in Amritsar and read our full How to Join NDA After 12th guide.
