If you dream of becoming an officer in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force after class 12, the NDA exam is your first step. This guide explains what NDA is in the simplest way possible, so any school student can understand it.
NDA stands for National Defence Academy. The full exam name is the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (NDA & NA).
The National Defence Academy is also a famous training place in Khadakwasla, near Pune, where selected students are trained to become officers.
The NDA exam is a national-level test that selects young students (after class 12) to become officers in the three armed forces:
Army
Navy
Air Force
It is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) two times every year. If you clear it, you get trained for free and later become a respected officer with a good salary and a proud career.
UPSC conducts NDA. It is held twice a year — called NDA 1 and NDA 2. So even if you miss one, the next chance comes in a few months.
In short, you can apply if you:
are unmarried,
are aged 16.5 to 19.5 years,
have passed or are appearing in class 12, and
are an Indian citizen (some special cases allowed).
Both boys and girls can apply. Arts and commerce students can apply for the Army wing; for the Air Force and Navy, you need Physics and Maths. For full details, read our NDA Eligibility 2026 guide.
The written exam has two papers:
|
Paper |
Subject |
Marks |
|---|---|---|
|
Paper 1 |
Mathematics |
300 |
|
Paper 2 |
General Ability Test (English + GK + Science + more) |
600 |
Total: 900 marks in the written exam. After that comes the SSB interview (900 marks) and a medical test. So you are judged on your studies and your personality.
SSB stands for Services Selection Board. It is a 5-day set of tasks that checks if you have officer qualities — confidence, honesty, teamwork, and clear thinking. It includes group activities, psychology tests, and a personal interview. You do not have to be the smartest in class; you have to be a good leader and a team player.
Apply for the NDA exam online on the UPSC website.
Clear the written exam (Maths + GAT).
Clear the SSB interview (5 days).
Pass the medical test.
Get selected in the merit list and join the National Defence Academy for training.
After about 3 years at NDA + 1 year at a service academy, you become an officer.
